Drink water Bacteria have tiny little leg-like projections that cling onto the inside of the bladder. Drinking water helps flush these bacteria through the urinary tract so they can’t stick to the walls and multiply. Water also dilutes the urine in your bladder making it less irritating and less painful to pass during a bladder infection. How much water to drink? Drinking too much water is unhealthy and can wash out your body salts. Sip small amounts of water through the day. Aim to drink around 6-8 x 6oz cups of water or 240mls per day. 2. Cranberry for UTI Research supports cranberry for preventing UTI (cranberry juice or cranberry tablets). This is because a substance in cranberries (polyphenols) stops bacteria sticking to the walls of the bladder. In this way cranberry may help you prevent bladder infection. Drink 1-2 x 6 oz glasses pure unsweetened cranberry juice or take equivalent dose in cranberry tablets. * Cranberry can interact with Warfarin so consult with your doctor if you take Warfarin 3. Completely empty your bladder Urine that remains in the bladder makes you prone to bladder infection. To empty your bladder completely you need to: * Sit on the toilet seat (or squat) never hover over the seat * Take your time to empty, don’t rush * Use the double void technique if you’re not emptying your bladder fully see here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RuG6SiVIA8 4. Intimate health Bacteria can enter the urine tube during intimacy. You’ve probably heard of honeymoon cystitis caused by E Coli bacteria entering the bladder causing UTI. Prevent UTI after intimacy: Try to empty your bladder before and after intimacy to reduce the risk of bacteria entering and multiplying. Use water based lubricant rather than oil based lubricant. Water based lubricants wash off more readily than oil based lubricants that stick to the skin increasing the likelihood of bacteria also clinging to the skin and multiplying. Wash with water only, no soap and no perfumes. 5. Vaginal Estrogen While this isn’t a natural solution, this is worth knowing about after menopause. Bodily changes with menopause make women more susceptible to bladder infections. The opening to the urine tube becomes larger because the tissues shrink with decreased estrogen. Vaginal estrogen (cream or pessary) can nourish and plump up the tissues lining the urine tube so bacteria are less able to enter and cause infection. You can speak with your doctor about estrogen to assist with UTI prevention In summary natural ways to prevent UTI include: * Drinking water * Cranberry * Emptying the bladder * Hygienic intimacy * Estrogen with menopause #howtopreventuti #preventutinaturally #cranberryforuti References Schaeffer, Edward M., MD, PhD.
